Razor Bumps and Shaving Irritation: Why They Keep Coming Back

Gwyn Corso April 13, 2026

Guys usually blame the razor. They use a sharper blade, a different brand of shaving cream, shave in the direction of their beard. But still get razor bumps. The reason is because it's not about the razor. The skin is.

What's Actually Happening

Pseudofolliculitis barbae (razor bumps) are caused by the hair curling back into the skin after it's been shaved. Your immune system will recognise it as an "invader", and mount an inflammatory response. Inflamed redness and bumps, sometimes even acne-like pustules. You're more likely to get them if you have thick, wavy hair. But guys with straight hair can get them if their skin is congested or dry.

The Skin Buildup Problem

Everyone's face gets a build up of dead skin. If you shave before removing that you're shaving over dirt. This cuts the hair at an angle that's more likely to cause curling. Exfoliating regularly allows the hair to grow out. A simple solution — without getting a new razor.

Denver's altitude and low humidity make this worse. Denver has an arid climate — your skin barrier is already working harder than it would somewhere else. More irritation from shaving is the result.

What Works

Exfoliate before you shave. Clear the buildup before the blade touches your face.

Hydrate your skin. Dry skin means more friction and more irritation. Moisturiser after shaving isn't optional.

Prep your skin. Warm water before you shave softens the hair. Less resistance, cleaner cut.

Get a clinical facial. A men's facial with targeted extractions clears blocked follicles and gives your skin a reset. Most guys notice a real difference after one session.

When It's Something Else

If it's still not getting better after weeks, it may be folliculitis or acne on your jaw. That needs a different approach. Book in for a facial and we'll diagnose you.
