The Real Reason Men Skip Skincare (It's Not Laziness)

Gwyn Corso August 24, 2026

Ask a guy why he doesn't have a skincare routine and you'll usually hear some version of "I don't need one" or "that's not really my thing." But research on men's skincare habits points to something different going on underneath those answers.

A 2024 systematic literature review identified four main drivers behind why men avoid skincare, and none of them are really about the products themselves.

1. Traditional Masculinity Norms

The biggest driver is cultural, not practical. Caring about your appearance still gets coded as feminine in a lot of circles, and for many men, admitting you use a moisturizer feels like it crosses a line they were taught not to cross. It's less about the routine and more about what having one seems to say about you.

2. Family and Peer Pressure

Men don't form these habits in a vacuum. What your friends, your dad, or your buddies at work say (or don't say) about skincare shapes whether you'll ever try it yourself. If nobody around you talks about it, starting can feel like standing out for the wrong reasons.

3. Social Media Influence

Skincare content online is still overwhelmingly built for and marketed to women. Scroll through most skincare content and it's easy to walk away thinking none of it applies to you, even when your skin has the exact same needs, and the exact same risk of shaving irritation and razor bumps that women's skincare content never covers.

4. Shifting Perceptions of Self-Care

Here's the driver working in the opposite direction: skincare is increasingly being reframed as basic self-care rather than vanity. This one's actually helping. As more men see skincare framed as maintenance, not pampering, the stigma is slowly breaking down.

The Part Nobody Talks About: Invisible Consumption

A separate 2023 UK study adds an important piece to this picture: many men who do use skincare products do it privately. They'll buy the moisturizer, use the cleanser, even see real results, but they won't bring it up out loud. Researchers call this invisible consumption: the product's in the routine, but it's never part of the conversation.

That's the barrier we see most often at Denver Skin Therapy. Not a lack of interest. Not even a lack of results. Just a reluctance to say it out loud. It shows up constantly with guys dealing with things like folliculitis and post-shave irritation, a problem plenty of men live with quietly for years before ever asking about it.

Why This Matters

None of these four drivers are really about skin. They're about identity, image, and not wanting to feel out of place. That's exactly why Denver Skin Therapy exists: a space built specifically for men, with no upselling, no fluff, and no pressure to explain yourself.

Good skin isn't about vanity. It's maintenance, same as anything else you take care of.
