What Are the Top Concerns for Men's Skin Care?
The majority of men have never considered their skin. Not that they do not care…it’s just because no one ever told them.
The first thing new male customers of Denver Skin Therapy say to me is that they always thought they were not a skincare person. And they mean it. It's not denial. It's not laziness. The thing is that skincare has been sold almost exclusively to women for decades, and that is why the male population lacks a reference point, a system, or even a place to begin.
Consider it this way: your face is your business card. It is the first thing that people look at. Yet so many men are putting serious time and money into their bodies, while their skin (the one thing we all look at first) gets nothing but a bar of soap and a dull razor.
I have spent more than two years specializing in men's facials and skin treatments here in Denver. Here are the most common skin concerns I see every day, and what actually works.

1. Blackheads & Congestion
This is the number one thing I see walking through my door. The skin of men is oilier and thicker compared to women's, with larger pores, so congestion accumulates quickly and goes unaddressed for years. Most men do not know that the visible rough texture on their nose and chin is not just how their skin looks. It's a buildup. And it is completely treatable.
I recently treated a groom-to-be who had never had a facial in his life. He came in with significant congestion, dullness, and uneven texture. After just one 60-minute treatment with microdermabrasion, the difference was night and day. He looked at himself in the mirror afterward and went quiet for a moment. Then: "Why did I wait so long?"
That reaction? I see it all the time. Once men see results, they are usually blown away.
Believe it or not, we can give you incredible results in just 60 minutes.
2. Folliculitis & Razor Irritation
Folliculitis, inflammation of the hair follicles, is very common in men who shave regularly. It shows up as small red bumps, ingrown hairs, and persistent irritation that is often mistaken for acne. The culprit is almost always a dull blade.
One of the simplest things you can do: replace your razor blades more often than you think you need to. Most men are using a blade long past its lifespan. A fresh blade glides; a dull one drags and tears. That dragging is what creates irritation, ingrowns, and inflammation.
3. Dry Skin & Damaged Skin Barrier
If you live in Colorado, you already know: this state is brutal on skin. High altitude, low humidity, intense UV exposure, and dramatic temperature swings all compromise the skin's moisture barrier — the protective layer that keeps hydration in and irritants out.
A damaged barrier looks like tightness, flaking, redness, and sensitivity — the rough feeling that men often just accept as normal. It is not normal. It is your skin asking for help.
The biggest mistake I see? Men using body wash or an all-in-one shower soap on their face. Your face is not your body. Facial skin is thinner and more sensitive with different needs entirely. A harsh body cleanser strips the oils your skin needs to stay balanced and protected.
Colorado is home to breathtaking landscapes…and one of the harshest climates for skin health in the US.
4. Dullness & Uneven Texture
Dullness is one of those things that sneaks up on you. Dead skin cells accumulate on the surface, making skin look flat and tired. Men's skin actually has a higher cell turnover rate than women's, largely due to daily shaving, but that does not mean exfoliation takes care of itself.
A targeted treatment like microdermabrasion physically removes that buildup, revealing the brighter, smoother skin underneath. The groom I mentioned? The dullness was gone after a single session. That brightness is what people notice, even if they cannot name it.
5. Aging & Sun Damage
Men tend to come to me for aging concerns later than women do, often after the lines and sun damage are already well established. Colorado's sun is no joke. UV exposure at altitude is significantly more intense, and most men I see have worn little to no SPF their entire lives.
The good news: it is never too late to start. Sunscreen is not optional. It is the single most effective anti-aging product that exists. Daily SPF will do more for your skin's future than any serum, treatment, or supplement.

Where to Start: The Non-Negotiable Basics
If you are not doing anything for your skin right now, start here. This is the foundation:
A gentle, face-specific cleanser, morning and night. Not body wash. Not bar soap. A real facial cleanser.
A moisturizer made for your skin type. Dry Colorado air requires daily hydration with no exceptions.
SPF every single morning. Yes, even in winter. Yes, even when it is cloudy.
Replace your razor blades regularly. If you are shaving with a dull blade, you are creating damage that does not need to be there.
That is it to start. Four things. Your skin will thank you within weeks.
Beyond the Skin: Why This Really Matters
Here is what I have noticed that nobody talks about: when men come in for a facial, something else happens beyond the skincare. For a lot of guys, it is one of the only times they truly slow down. No screens, no decisions, no performance. Just an hour of intentional rest.
And when they see results? The confidence shift is real. Men who never gave their skin a second thought start standing differently, smiling more, making eye contact with more ease. Skin confidence is confidence, full stop.
You invest in your health, your wardrobe, your career. Your face is the first thing the world sees. It deserves the same attention.
This is what a man can expect from a skin treatment at Denver Skin Therapy.
