5 Top Skin Care Recommendations for Men Over 30
Taking care of your skin does not make you a woman. It makes you a man who gives a damn about himself.
Your 30s are when the bill arrives. The sun exposure you shrugged off in your 20s starts showing up as hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone. The oiliness and congestion you ignored is now visible. The all-in-one body wash you have been using on your face since college is finally catching up with you. Late nights, energy drinks, Colorado altitude…it all lands on your skin eventually.
I see it every week. Men in their 30s sitting down in my chair for the first time, genuinely surprised by what their skin actually looks like up close. Not because they are vain but because nobody ever told them to pay attention.
One of my favorite clients was a guy who worked in construction. Hardworking, tough, zero skincare routine his entire life. He came in for a 60-minute facial and when I handed him the mirror afterward he went completely quiet. Then: "It's like looking at my face for the first time." Men do not realize how much environment, pollutants, physical work, and years of zero care accumulate on their skin. The good news is it is never too late. Here are the five recommendations I give every man over 30.
1. Wear Sunscreen. Every Single Day.
If there is one thing I could make every man in Denver do starting tomorrow, it is this. Sunscreen is not a summer product. It is not optional. It is the single most effective anti-aging tool that exists and most men I see have never used it consistently in their lives.
Colorado sun is not a joke. UV exposure at altitude is significantly more intense than at sea level. The hyperpigmentation and sun damage I see on men in their 30s is real, visible, and completely preventable. A daily SPF 30 or higher applied every morning will do more for your skin over the next decade than any serum, treatment, or product you could buy. Yes, even in winter. Yes, even when it is cloudy. Just do it.
Fun Fact: We are the first generation to need sunscreen based on the amount of blue light we are exposed to indoors. Couple that with the outdoors - whew!
2. Build an Actual Routine
Stop using whatever is in the shower. Stop using your partner's products. I know it feels like one more thing to think about, but your face is not your body. Facial skin is thinner, more sensitive, and has completely different needs. Using a harsh body cleanser strips the oils your skin needs to stay balanced and it is one of the main reasons men walk around with congested, irritated skin and have no idea why.
A real routine does not need to be complicated. Three things: a gentle cleanser morning and night, a moisturizer suited to your skin type, and sunscreen every morning. That is it. Your skin will respond within weeks.
3. Know Your Actual Skin Type
Here is where most men go wrong even when they are trying to do the right thing. They grab whatever says "for men" on the label and assume it will work. But men's skin is not one-size-fits-all. Oily skin needs completely different products than dry skin. Acne-prone skin needs a different approach than skin dealing with sensitivity or hyperpigmentation.
When a new client sits down with me, one of the first things I do is identify their actual skin type. For example, a lot of men who believe they have dry skin actually have oily skin with a damaged barrier. Stop guessing. A professional consultation gets it right once so you can stop wasting money on the wrong products.
Stop buying all the things. They’re not for you!
4. Watch What You Are Putting In Your Body
Nobody wants to hear this one, but it matters. Your skin is a direct reflection of what is happening inside your body. Vaping, smoking, excessive drinking, energy drinks instead of water — all of it shows up on your face.
Nicotine restricts blood flow to the skin and accelerates aging faster than almost anything else. Alcohol dehydrates and inflames. Energy drinks are essentially dehydration in a can. You do not have to live perfectly but if you are spending money on good skincare and vaping every day, you are working against yourself. Drink more water. It is the cheapest skincare product on the market and it actually works.
Energy drinks: the sugar causes glycation which accelerates sagging and wrinkles. Caffeine is a diruretic which pulls water out of your body and dehydrates skin. Inflammation is caused but the sugar spike and cocktail of synthetic additives. Why are you drinking these again?
5. Get a Professional Treatment
At-home products maintain your skin. Professional treatments transform it. There is a real difference. That construction worker had been living in his skin his entire life and had no idea what it actually looked like without years of congestion, dead skin buildup, and environmental damage sitting on top of it. One facial changed that. He walked out clearer, brighter, and more confident.
A professional esthetician identifies what is actually going on with your skin, recommends treatments specific to your concerns, and builds you a home care plan that fits your actual life. For men over 30 dealing with sun damage, congestion, or early aging, treatments like microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and microneedling make a measurable difference. You do not need to come in every week. Once a month or even once a season puts your skin in a completely different category than doing nothing at all.
The Bottom Line
Your 30s are not too late. They are actually the perfect time — early enough to prevent serious damage, old enough to finally take it seriously. The men I see who start a real routine in their 30s are consistently the ones who look the best in their 40s and 50s. That is not luck.
You invest in your health, your wardrobe, your career. Your face is the first thing the world sees every single day. It deserves the same attention.
